Goal
Limit unnecessary contact between police and the public. This session that includes:
- opposing bills that increase criminalization of fleeing police - such increased penalties only serve to escalate encounters between police and the public;
- supporting bills that impose higher thresholds to justify police contact with civilians (such as bills that remove the “odor of marijuana” alone as a justification for a search and seizure);
- opposing bills that loosen restrictions on police practices that have proven to be excessively dangerous to the public, such as vehicular pursuits;
- supporting bills that disincentivize needless contact with the public, such as bills banning traffic citation quotas;
- supporting bills that will remove police from traffic enforcement and mental health crises.
